Above you see what is known as a 'case', not a tray, and no, not a drawer. This one is specifically designed to be a California Job Case. It holds movable type used in old-time letterpress printshops. This design was created when print shops were on the move toward California during westward American expansion. The previous 400 years saw type held in two seperate cases, the Upper and the Lower case.
Letterpress wood and metal type is always cut and cast backwards (like on this site), so that it's printed product has the letters facing forwards. You can easily cut a letter or shape into the end of a cut carrot or potato to see what this is like!
Each letter of 'type' on this page is draggable with your mouse or finger.
You can practice putting type away like printers did (and still do!), when speed was of the essence! This is a test of skill to see how fast you can distribute your form. (extra praise for longer forms)
When you're ready, press BEGIN to race against the clock!
